I am enrolled in CST 515 Technology and Communication, as part of the requirements for a Master's degree in Contemporary Communications. I am about halfway finished the Contemporary Communications program and have enjoyed it thus far. Some of the other classes I have taken are Business Communications, Cultural Communications and Communications Campaigns. In addition to CST 515, I also am taking Media Criticism this semester. I am pursuing my Master's degree to further my knowledge of communications and to just learn more! Hopefully, I will graduate from the program in Spring 2011.

My undergraduate degree is from Gettysburg College in Gettysburg, Pennsylvania. There I majored in Political Science and minored in Spanish. My first internship was with Luntz, Maslansky Strategic Research in Alexandria, Virginia. Luntz is a public relations firm that uses dials and language to determine which words work in public relations campaigns. While an intern at Luntz during the spring semester of my junior year of college, I took part in the Lutheran College Washington Semester consortium that allowed me to live in Rosslyn, Virginia (just over the bridge from Georgetown) and take two night classes while I interned during the day. That following summer, I became an intern at Johns Hopkins Bayview Medical Center, in the office where I currently work.

Now, I am a Public Affairs Specialist in the Office of Communications & Public Affairs at Johns Hopkins Bayview, which is a member of the Johns Hopkins Health System. The Health System also includes The Johns Hopkins Hospital, Howard County General Hospital and Suburban Hospital. At Johns Hopkins Bayview, the Office of Communications & Public Affairs handles all of the public relations, media relations, event planning, marketing and advertising for the Medical Center. We also manage the Web sites, both internal (intranet) and external (Internet site), and design collateral for various services and departments.

Specifically, I handle media relations for services and personnel located at Johns Hopkins Bayview, design collateral and manage all print advertising for the Medical Center. My largest responsibilities are design and marketing/advertising. I design primarily all brochures, informational booklets, posters, flyers and event collateral, and edit all copy for these materials. I write copy for and design all print ads, as well as arranging and scheduling insertions parallel to which seminars and other educational events are happening at any given time. In addition, I work on health mailings for different clinical services from start to finish, meaning that I edit the copy for the piece, design it and then arrange the mailing--coordinating mailing criteria and timing with a mailhouse. I love my job because I get to work on so many aspects of the public relations and marketing/advertising field. I'm also doing something different every day.

My career goals are to stay within the public relations and advertising field. What I really enjoy most about my current job is the writing I get to do for Johns Hopkins Bayview's quarterly 16-page magazine.
